Before & After -A Personalized Bathroom & Closet Transformation

Ever wondered how a compact, outdated bathroom and closet can be transformed into a seamless, highly functional space designed around real life? This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful cabinetry design and planning can elevate everyday routines without sacrificing style. This custom renovation proves that even the most challenging layouts can become cohesive, elegant, and deeply personal when every inch is designed with purpose.

First Walkthrough - Design Challenges

The original master bathroom and adjacent closet presented several functional and aesthetic challenges. Designed without consideration for shared use, the space lacked sufficient storage for two people, particularly for the husband’s specialized police gear alongside everyday wardrobe essentials. Double sliding pocket doors physically and visually separated the bathroom from the closet, making the already small footprint feel cramped and disconnected. Low ceilings, dark flooring, and an enclosed closet further contributed to a dim, uninviting atmosphere. Most critically, the space offered no customized solutions for safely storing police equipment in a home shared with a young, curious child. Because the bathroom and closet were separated by sliding pocket doors, the goal was to unify the overall experience while still respecting the functional needs of each zone. A key move was shifting the half-shower wall to the toilet side and replacing it with a tall, single-pane glass panel. This change would open up sightlines and allow light to travel throughout the space.

Design Inspiration - Minimal, Spa-Like & Warm

The clients were drawn to inspirational imagery featuring: Light oak finishes, minimal, spa-like interiors, thoughtful, layered lighting, neutral palettes that flowed seamlessly between tile and cabinetry.

Designed for Real Life - Form Meets Function

His zone included:

  • Lockable drawers for secure storage
  • A pull-out desk for a laptop
  • A dedicated police gear charging station
  • Integrated LED lighting
  • A corkboard for work notes

For shared use with individual needs:

  • Dual mirrored medicine cabinets provide equal storage and symmetry.
  • In-drawer outlets on her side keep styling tools plugged in and ready

Since the apartment did not include a washer and dryer, the couple relied on a wheeled hamper for trips to the building’s laundry room. To accommodate this, a custom cabinet was designed with a concealed storage area and a removable base—allowing the hamper to roll in and out effortlessly.

A major design decision was removing the wall and pocket doors entirely between the bathroom and closet. While separating spaces is often ideal, the footprint here demanded openness to achieve true functionality. Opening the layout allowed for better light flow, increased storage opportunities, and a cohesive, multifunctional environment.  An additional detail—LED toe-kick lighting at the vanity—introduced a soft nighttime glow, allowing one partner to move comfortably without disturbing the other.

The Result - A Seamless, Multi-Functional Retreat

This project truly reflects Spectrum Fine Cabinetry’s commitment to personalized convenience—subtle, intentional solutions that support daily routines. The clients were thrilled with the final outcome. What was once a cramped, disconnected bathroom and closet is now a thoughtfully designed, highly functional space that meets both of their needs—safely, beautifully, and efficiently. Through custom cabinetry, smart planning, and intentional design, this project demonstrates how personalization transforms not just spaces but everyday life.

Designing for Real Life

Understanding how the clients actually live was key to the final design. One of the most important considerations was safety—ensuring police gear remained secure and out of reach, without turning the space into something that felt cold or vault-like.
